Paper & Board

Paper & Board

The applications of the paper and board materials are diverse in nature and need frequent processing steps throughout their life cycle, which requires constant mechanical results. In converting, printing through to the end use of a final product, strength characteristics are necessary as far as quality and reliability are concerned.

When printing is going on, be it in sheet-fed mode or a continuous web, the paper must be able to withstand stress during handling without collapsing. The tensile strength and elongation are key parameters that are therefore positively monitored to fulfill stringent performance criteria. The evaluation of these properties is normally done by testing standardized paper strips as per global standards like ISO and TAPPI. The obtained data provides a possibility to evaluate tensile breaking force, elongation at break, breaking length, and tear resistance.

Versatile and dedicated systems

Presto Stantest provides a variety of tensile and compression testing equipment, as well as special tools that are used in friction, peel, and tear examinations. The solutions are designed to meet a wide range of testing needs in paper, tissue, and board material.

Typical applications include the following:

Paper

  • bending stiffness
  • coefficient of friction (ink-coated surface in high-speed automated processing machines, etc.)
  • corrugated medium test (CMT)
  • internal bond strength
  • ring-crush test (RCT)
  • short-span compression test (SCT)
  • tensile dry and wet ('finch') test
  • zero-span tensile test

Tissue

  • ball burst
  • tensile dry and wet ('finch') test

Board

  • 3 and 4-point flexure corrugated
  • box crush test (BCT)
  • compressive S-test buckling
  • crease test
  • edge crush test (ECT)
  • flat-crush test (FCT)
  • puncture test
  • pin adhesion test

Presto Stantest systems are also suitable for the testing of finished objects that have paper and board in addition to the raw materials. For example, page pull testing is applied in determining the adhesive strength of book bindings to make them durable in hardcovers, magazines, catalogs, directories, and similar publications.

These testing facilities will help manufacturers to ensure that the quality of products remains unchanged as the companies satisfy the domestic and international standards.
