Solution

  • Software-controlled touchscreen tensile tester.
  • High-capacity grips specifically designed for crimped connectors.
  • Load cells matched to the connector design forces for precise measurements.

Benefits

  • Consistent and repeatable testing through touchscreen menu selections.
  • Immediate display of pass/fail results and critical force characteristics.
  • Compliance with international standards for connector performance.

The use of the Presto Stantest twin-column tensile testing system has enabled the manufacturers to increase the variety of crimped cable connectors they are testing in-house and provide themselves with a greater level of information regarding the various modes of failure in cable connectors. The system is capable of measuring very high pull-off forces, greater than 5 kN, with excellent accuracy, which is accomplished by using interchangeable load cells matched to the connector design being measured. With the touch control and the touch screen interface, operators can execute fully repeatable tests with instant pass/fail decisions and live force graph analysis. These high-capacity grips provide a strong clutch on connectors during tests to enable engineers to assess crimp strength and product durability to international testing standards. The machine has saved manufacturers from outsourcing testing services, cut testing response time, and enhanced their product development and production quality control.

Implementing the Presto Stantest twin-column high-capacity tensile system has enabled manufacturers to expand the range of components tested in-house while obtaining detailed insights into failure modes. This guarantees quality and speed of product development.

Requirement

A major interconnect producer in the world needed a test method to test crimped cable joints at force levels that exceed 5 kN and have to be able to withstand the pull-offs. Previous equipment required the outsourcing of high-load components, increasing costs and turnaround times.

Solution

Presto Stantest supplied a twin-column universal testing machine with a 50 kN capacity and interchangeable load cells tailored to the peak forces of various connector lines. Accuracy is maximized when test values approach the full-scale capacity of the load cell.

Testing follows key international standards, where crimp samples are assessed to failure either to calibrate manufacturing tools or support new product development. Correct gripping ensures the connector is securely held while allowing the crimped contact to be pulled from the cable without interference.

The touchscreen interface provides intuitive software control for fully repeatable testing, with motorized operation maintaining consistent test speeds. Real-time force graphs deliver immediate insight into failure characteristics, enabling engineers to refine processes and enhance product reliability.

Test Equipment

  • Twin-column tensile testing machine capable of 50 kN rated
  • Testing Load cell capacities are 200 N, 2.5 kN, 50 kN
  • Crimped connector high-capacity grips

The benefits of on-site high-force tensile testing would mean the manufacturers decrease reliance on third-party testing, and can gain better turnaround testing and high standards of quality performance to facilitate engineering and manufacturing excellence.
