Face Mask Strength Testing

Solution

  • Motorized or software-controlled tensile and compression test systems.
  • Load cells and fixtures matched to the design of the mask.

Benefits

  • Accurate, reliable, and repeatable testing aligned with PPE industry standards and internal specifications.
  • Interchangeable fixtures allow both tensile and compression tests on the same platform.
  • Automated calculation of results with clear pass/fail indicators.

Requirement

There has been an almost unprecedented level of global demand for face masks, ranging from common disposable masks to N95 respiratory masks for medical professionals. The production of masks is taken into consideration; ear loops, nose-fitting strips, and sterile packaging are considered.

To be effective, masks are required to meet standards across all regions of the world, including ASTM F2100 and EN 14683, which describe processes of measuring fit, efficiency in blocking bacteria, and differential pressure (breath resistance). Protection effectiveness is affected by mask and filter material, ear loops or tie bands, and nose fitting.

Solution

Manufacturers of masks and other PPE rely on tensile and compression testing to evaluate mechanical strength and material integrity. Lightweight and non-woven mask materials are subjected to tensile forces to check for tear resistance, while ear-loop connections are tested to confirm they withstand repeated use. Packaging is also peel-tested to ensure ease of opening while maintaining sterility.

A range of interchangeable fixtures enables pull and push testing, as well as resistance to tear and puncture, of all mask components. Automated operation delivers repeatable, precise testing procedures for international and in-house requirements.

For disposable masks used with ventilators and resuscitators, flexibility tests of check valves and connectors check for the correct torque and seal. Presto Stantest’s computer-controlled torque testers provide precise, consistent measurement for these critical components.

Test Equipment

  • MultiTest test stand, motorised or software-controlled for tensile/compression tests.
  • Load cells rated to match expected test loads.
  • Standard grips and fixtures for sample and component holding.
