Requirement

Recent years have seen the introduction of new regulations by some UK local councils regarding the installation, use, and removal of seasonal decorations. This is to ensure that decorative items, like Christmas lights, are safely installed. As part of these guidelines, electrical contractors are required to perform ‘pull tests’ on all anchorage points used for suspending lighting systems from building structures. This ensures that each fixing can withstand the applied loads, reducing the risk of structural damage or injury to the public.

Solution

Presto Stantest supported contractors in evaluating anchorage strength for a town center festive lighting installation. A digital force gauge equipped with a suitable test hook was connected to eyebolts used for securing lighting fixtures to building facades. Each anchorage point was subjected to a controlled ‘pull test’ with a specified minimum load of 50 kgf to verify its holding capacity.

The force gauge enabled accurate monitoring of applied force, with clear visual and audible indicators to confirm whether each test met the required threshold. Additionally, measurement data was stored within the device for traceability and documentation. This approach allowed contractors to validate installation safety in accordance with prescribed standards, significantly reducing the likelihood of fixture failure and associated risks.
