Requirement

Handbags, clutches, and personal luggage are made with the aim of safeguarding treasured items when carrying or in everyday activity. Fastenings, clasps, handles, and straps are subject to significant scrutiny in regard to the reliability of the product. Testing is not only done to ensure that attachments can withstand anticipated load, but also in order to have the general feel and performance of the product match the expectations of the consumer.

One-handed magnetic self-guiding clasps need to move freely in and out with an equal amount of strength. Buckles, stitching handles, and strap adjusters are also tested so that they can be in a position to endure constant tension without breaking down. Complete mechanical testing must be done on all the fastening parts to avoid early wear or rupture.

Testing Approach

Leading handbag manufacturers, from everyday designs to luxury ranges, rely on software-controlled force and torque testing systems to objectively assess component performance.

For instance, a designer handbag brand sought to evaluate the torque required to operate their twist clasps. Previously, the assessment was subjective, relying on human judgment of stiffness or looseness. Using torque testing, the clasps were rotated through a defined angle under controlled conditions to quantify acceptable tolerance bands. This allowed clear pass/fail criteria to be established and provided suppliers with actionable data to minimize defects.

The Vortex-i torque tester, with software-controlled routines, proved ideal for this application. Test parameters were programmed into the system, enabling automatic calculation and graphical presentation of results. Operators could instantly view pass/fail status, providing a robust and repeatable quality check for each batch.

Test Equipment

  • MultiTest-i and MultiTest-xt software-controlled force testers for push/pull evaluations
  • Vortex-i and Vortex-xt software-controlled torque testers for rotational measurements
  • Appropriately rated cells and torque cells
  • Custom or standard fittings made to hold on to clasps, buckles, straps, and others.

The solution will also be able to test the parts of a handbag and luggage with precision and repeatability, which improves the durability, the experience of the user, and the brand confidence in both the domestic and export markets.
