Jewellery Tensile Strength Testing for Safety and Durability

Solution

  • Software-controlled tensile testing system
  • Selection of hook probes, vice grips, and bollard grips for different specimen geometries.

Benefits

  • Precise and repeatable testing to verify mechanical strength and safety compliance.
  • Semi-automated operation ensures consistent results across multiple products.
  • Using interchangeable fixtures, all jewelry types and materials can be tested.

"Mechanical strength is essential for ensuring safety and durability. Presto Stantest systems allow our QC personnel to certify products for export."

Requirement

The mechanical strength of necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings (jewelry from all precious, semi-precious, and synthetic materials) must be verified by manufacturers and importers. The properties of the alloys, including gold-copper, platinum-copper, and platinum-ruthenium, affect the processing as well as the durability.

Children's jewelry is subject to rigorous international standards. These include standards in Europe, the USA, Canada, Japan, and China to help avoid risks of choking or strangulation. ASTM standards F2999 (adults) and F2923 (children) contain safety standards.

EN71-1 is a popular European standard to test for physical/mechanical properties. Many global retailers also enforce proprietary testing to maintain high-quality standards.

Solution

A widely used test across these standards is the pull test.

This guarantees that clasps, fasteners, or stringing components (metallic chains, leather, or nylon) withstand a certain applied force. For example, ASTM F2923 specifies 15 lb of pull for children's necklaces to avoid strangulation.

Clasps, chains, and stringed jewelry are evaluated for tensile properties for safety and quality control. Presto Stantest torque, tensile, and compression systems are used for quality control in leading manufacturers. Specialized grips and intuitive software enable QC technicians to repeat tests for consistent, accurate results—and these systems are ideal for both precious and fashion jewelry manufacturing.
